Inflexibility of age

As my youth quietly slips beneath the rising tide of years, I find myself becoming gripped by the stranglehold of inflexibility. As a younger man, I loved nothing more than to run off at a whim, leaving careful planning and forethought as crumpled heaps covered in a cloud of dust I sped away into the night.

Well times certainly have turned. While in years past I would gladly go out for the evening with only a starting point in mind, I now cower at the thought of an unplanned detour.

This evening is a perfect example. I had an usually busy day today. The frenetic pace was perhaps just maybe half a step ahead of what was mangable for me, so instead of feeling exhilirated, by the end of the day I was exhausted. The only thing on my mind was getting through the last few minutes of the day

A lot of pressure

About 4 years ago I got I was living in Brooklyn, and commuting in to the city most days via a long subway ride. I usually had about an hour underground in each direction. Back then there weren't iPhones, and I didn't listen to a lot of music anyway so I had find something to do on these long and interminably boring commutes. My mental health was being seriously affected. I was becoming depressed, and I think it was because of the long periods of boredom i was being exposed to on a daily basis.

At that point in my life i had a T-Mobile MDA, which was a remarkable smartphone, and a peice of electronics which had a major influence on my world view and my future.

What was so special about the MDA? It had what I consider the perfect form. It was a large touchscreen device that hid a beautiful keyboard that was exposed when you slid the screen to the right. When I would write using that phone, i could feel the creativity flowing through me. It made me want to write, and I was inspired to blog nearly everyday.

I then upgraded to the Cingular 8525. It was the successor device to the MDA, and its keyboard was even better. The 8525 was my most beloved device i have ever owned. It combined an amazing keyboard with a powerful and modern (for its time) operating system.

I then fell pray to the lure of the iPhone, and though it is an amazing web appliance, media player, and applications platform, it is only good for media consumption, but extremely poor for media creation. I stopped writing, i had left my muse in a drawer.

Now i have this beautiful Touch Pro 2. It has a really nice keyboard, and i feel a lot of pressure to write, and write well. If I decide to keep this thing i hope i can write enough to fulfill my desire.
