Five things I don't like about the iPad

First let me say, I love the iPad. It really is replacing all but a few of my computing needs, with just a couple of exceptions.

1) Google Reader on the browser is not a great experience. 90% of my time online (outside of work) is spent on Google Reader. It is a great way to manage the flow of information, and it has become my home base on the web. Because I spend my time switching between at least 5 web connected devices, not having to deal with different RSS clients makes things easy. Google has done a great job with making really good web experiences for desktop browsing and phone based browsing. However neither is really suitable for use on the iPad. Google has done a good job with gmail for the iPad, but I am still waiting for reader to be fixed.

2) No Flash. This one has been done to death, but there are still a ton of videos I would like to see that are unavailable to iPad users. And to make matters worse Apple has removed the little question mark cube that used to show up when a flash object wasn't playable. Now I don't even know there is something I am missing.

3) it's kind of heavy. This is also a common complaint, and it isn't really a big deal, but my arms get tired (even though I am really strong).

4) apps are more expensive than iPhone versions. This one may seem kind of petty, but I don't think apps are more complicated to write because the screen is bigger. I know the developers deserve to make money, and $4-$9 isn't that much money in the scheme of things, but now that I am used to iPhone app pricing the premium is just a little more than I would like.

5) I can't charge the iPad from my laptop's USB port. This is a feature I rely on, I live in a tiny apartment and finding a plug that is convenient is a hassle, but just swapping cables in and out of my laptop is really convenient. Also as a frequent business traveller not having to pack the plug is great, one less thing to pack is something I appreciate.

As you can see this is a really nitpicky list. Overall I am completely satisfied with the iPad. I think the relatively minuscule nature of these complaints should clue you in to how much I like the iPad, but if you can't find something to complain about than you can't call yourself an early adopter.

My family is amazing

I am the luckiest boy in the world. Today I was presented with an amazing, wonderful, magical iPad. My amazing parents and my more than beautiful girlfriend gave me a phenomenal birthday present. I knew shifting aimlessly for 15 years after high school before finally getting my shit together would pay off.

I love you mom and dad, and to my girlfriend, plus two (she knows what that means).
